Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2021, Volume 22, Issue 7,   Pages 940-956 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.2000071

Abstract: Healthcare and telemedicine industries are relying on technology that is connected to the Internet. Digital health data are more prone to cyber attacks because of the treasure trove of personal data they possess. This necessitates protection of digital medical images and their secure transmission. In this paper, an encryption technique based on mutated with Lorenz and Lü is employed to generate high pseudo-random key streams. The proposed chaos- cryptic system operates on the integer wavelet transform (IWT) domain and a bio-inspired , unit for enhancing the confusion and diffusion phase in an approximation coefficient. Finally, an XOR operation is performed with a quantised chaotic set from the developed combined attractors. The algorithm attains an average entropy of 7.9973, near-zero correlation with an NPCR of 99.642%, a UACI of 33.438%, and a keyspace of 10. Further, the experimental analyses and NIST statistical test suite have been designed such that the proposed technique has the potency to withstand any statistical, differential, and brute force attacks.

Anion-exchange membrane direct ethanol fuel cells: Status and perspective

T.S. Zhao, Y.S. Li, S.Y. Shen

Frontiers in Energy 2010, Volume 4, Issue 4,   Pages 443-458 doi: 10.1007/s11708-010-0127-5

Abstract: Direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFCs) are a promising carbon-neutral and sustainable power source for portable, mobile, and stationary applications. However, conventional DEFCs that use acid proton-exchange membranes (typically Nafion type) and platinum-based catalysts exhibit low performance (i.e., the state-of-the-art peak power density is 79.5 mW/cm at 90°C). Anion-exchange membrane (AEM) DEFCs that use low-cost AEM and non-platinum catalysts have recently been demonstrated to yield a much better performance (i.e., the state-of-the-art peak power density is 160 mW/cm at 80°C). This paper provides a comprehensive review of past research on the development of AEM DEFCs, including the aspects of catalysts, AEMs, and single-cell design and performance. Current and future research challenges are identified along with potential strategies to overcome them.

New Year’s Message for 2022

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2022, Volume 16, Issue 1,   Pages 14-14 doi: 10.1007/s11783-022-1538-3

Abstract: 2022 marks the 15th anniversary of the journal of Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering (FESE). To date, FESE has received more than 5500 submissions from more than 80 countries and our acceptance rate is ~20%. FESE has also been providing a communication and development platform by increasing its editorial board, organizing conferences, and setting up awards. We are grateful for the support from authors, reviewers, readers, and editorial colleagues to jointly make FESE an internationally recognized journal in the Environmental Science and Engineering field. FESE is becoming an important and irreplaceable forum on environmental issues. Nowadays, environmental issues have attracted tremendous attention and they call for solutions to combat pollution, to achieve carbon neutrality, to tackle climate change, and to promote sustainable development. Accordingly, research is tackling more complex challenges and FESE is conveying knowledge and technological solutions to address these challenges. FESE will implement several new initiatives in 2022. First, FESE will further increase the quality of its publications and its services to the Environmental Science and Engineering community. Second, FESE will publish articles in a more timely fashion by publishing them on a monthly basis. Third, we will introduce a new article style, “Opinion,” that will broaden our perspectives and focus. Fourth, we have been launching the first Young Talent Award which will recognize promising investigators. 2022 will certainly be a year full of passion and expectations. Hereby, we hope that FESE will march toward a higher level with the hard work from editorial board members and editorial office, the continuous support from authors and reviewers, and the close collaborations among Chinese Academy of Engineering, Tsinghua University, Higher Education Press, Springer, and other organizations. Finally, we wish you all a happy, healthy, and fruitful 2022!

Exergy analysis and simulation of a 30MW cogeneration cycle

Nikhil Dev, Samsher, S. S. Kachhwaha, Rajesh Attri

Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering 2013, Volume 8, Issue 2,   Pages 169-180 doi: 10.1007/s11465-013-0263-9

Abstract:

Cogeneration cycle is an efficient mean to recover the waste heat from the flue gases coming out of gas turbine. With the help of computer simulation, design parameters may be selected for the best performance of cogeneration cycle. In the present work a program is executed in software EES on the basis of mathematical modelling described in paper to study cogeneration cycle performance for different parameters. Results obtained are compared with the results available in literature and are found in good agreement with them. Real gas and water properties are inbuilt in the software. Results show that enthalpy of air entering the combustion chamber is higher than that of the flue gases at combustion chamber outlet. For different operative conditions, energy and exergy efficiencies follow similar trends; although, exergy efficiency values are always lower than the corresponding energy efficiency ones. From the results it is found that turbine outlet temperature (TIT) of 524°C is uniquely suited to efficient cogeneration cycle because it enables the transfer of heat from exhaust gas to the steam cycle to take place over a minimal temperature difference. This temperature range results in the maximum thermodynamic availability while operating with highest temperature and highest efficiency cogeneration cycle. Effect of cycle pressure ratio (CR), inlet air temperature (IAT) and water pressure at heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) inlet on the 30 MW cogeneration cycle is also studied.
